TRIBAL TATTOO

In ancient culture, tribal tattoos were originally derived from traditional tribal art. This ink has been used for years as a rite of passage for Maori people of New Zealand, and many other cultures.

The body art is also used for social status and family identification. In some cultures, it is even used for medicinal purposes.

Not all techniques are the same, how most of the tribal tattoos are solid black designs. Some artists occasionally use some colour to break up the black in the designs.

In New Zealand specifically, the aboriginal people create some of the most unique tattoos in the world. Maori families use tribal tattooing as a sacred form of family and personal identification.

Ta Moko is the traditional term for the Maori tribal tattoo techniques.

There are many specified designs that each represents different meanings. From strength, prosperity and health, to protection and family ancestors.

Most of these tribal tattoos are made up of certain design elements representing your life journey and your family.

Although Ta Moko tribal tattoos are now extremely common to be placed on arms and legs, they were traditionally reserved for the face only. This is because the Maori people consider the head to be the most sacred part of the whole body.

The most common process of getting these tattoos onto the skin is dipping a chisel into a jar of ink pigment and inserting this into the skin. The chisel is then struck with a mallet to get the ink into the top layers of the skin. Many say this is extremely painful, however showing this during the process was often considered as a sign of weakness.

People being tattooed in this way often bring around their closest and dearest friends and family to experience the process with them as this is such a sacred tradition.

Many people in the modern world now have tribal ink on their bodies, most likely as they like the look of the patterns more than understanding the ancient meaning.
