Choosing a tattoo

Getting a new tattoo is so fun and exciting, as well as slightly painful too. However, the process of choosing what you want and who will do it is so important. You need to be 110% sure of what you’re getting because this is going to be on your skin forever. I mean, that’s obvious but if you didn’t realise that, maybe you shouldn’t be getting a tattoo yet…

I’m not yet heavily tattooed, but each of the tattoos I have I completely love. Some have meaning to me, some I have because I just loved the designs. But I have absolutely no regrets and I’m so happy with all the artists I’ve chosen.

My biggest advice would be to research, research, research!!

It’s so important to find a style that you absolutely love and not something that you’ll grow out of in a few years. It seems there are endless tattoo styles out there right now so don’t just go with the first thing you see without looking into other things first. I often use Instagram and Pinterest to research different styles and ideas.

Once you’ve landed on a style and idea that you want, now it’s time to find an artist that specialises in the idea that you like. So many people just go to their local studio where there is an artist that tries to do every style. But personally, I would rather spend more money and travel to ensure I have a specialised artist who will do the most amazing job at the ink I’m about to have on my body forever. For custom designs, you need an artist that is so damn passionate about the style you’ve chosen. They should understand each intricate part about the design and not just copy something they’ve found on the internet.

Another thing you need to consider is the placement of where you new tattoo is going to go on your body. It has to be somewhere where the design will fit well. I know you’ll want to show off your new ink, but it’s so important not to just get it somewhere on show for the sake of it. Consider the shape and size of it and even chat to the artist about where it will look best. Also, if you’re planning to have a full sleeve eventually, keep this mind and make sure you don’t put the tattoo in a place that can’t be adapted to. I love chatting with the artists about my tattoo ideas and how they’ll eventually fit with the tattoos I already have.

Now you’ve decided everything, get booked in! If you’re going with a popular amazing artist, you may have to wait a while. I think my longest wait so far has been almost a year, but it’s always so worth it.
