AFTERCARE TIPS FROM CARA

Tattoo care tips from our guest writer Cara:

“I wanted to share with you some of my top tips for tattoo aftercare. I have quite a few tattoos myself and I think my advice could help those are just starting to get ink and they’re not too sure what to do.

For the remainder of the day you get tattooed, I would always say to keep it wrapped up. Your artist should clean the tattoo once their done, moisturise it and wrap it up, usually using cling film. I always keep mine like this until the evening.

That first night, you should unwrap it and clean it again and re-moisturise. For cleaning, I always use an unscented anti-bacterial hand wash and some kitchen roll. (Obviously once you’re tattoo is healed, clean it with our Exfoliating Body Wash) You will probably find a lot of excess ink has leaked but don’t panic, this is normal! Your tattoo is not falling off. Okay yes, I may have thought this was the case when I got my first one, whatever. Anyway this needs to be cleaned off to avoid infection. Then you should wrap it back up for your first night.

The one big thing I will tell anyone is, DO NOT itch it even though you will feel like you will literally die if you do not itch your skin right this second. It’s the worst part of the healing process for me. I hate it. I tend to itch around the tattoo and most of the time, that settles it but you really need to be careful not to catch it.  It’s like having the raddest scab ever. You know you shouldn’t pick it off, but it feels like you need to. But don’t. It is not a good idea.

Personally, I like to air out my tattoos as I work in an office so as long as I regularly clean and moisturise them, they heal pretty well and fast.

Now, depending on your job/activities, would determine if you should keep your new ink wrapped up for a couple more days or not. If you’re going to be in a dirty environment, or have anything in contact with the skin, keep it regularly cleaned, moisturised and wrapped up. However, do be aware not to let it get too hot. This can cause a heat rash and infection if not taken care of. Early this year, my fiancée got a couple of leg tattoos the day before we went to Download Festival. I told him it wasn’t a good idea, but of course he did it anyway. The weather was super hot and with his leg being wrapped in cling film under skinny jeans for the whole weekend, of course he got a heat rash and his leg doubled in size! After a couple hours in A&E and a few days with some medicated cream, he was fine. But still, be warned people…”
