Art & Ink Gallery

How long have you been running Art & Ink?

Since the beginning of 2016! Our first location was located in the district of Modekwartier (which is the design and fashion district of Arnhem!) The area is full of creative studios of all sizes and a generous mix of graduates from the art & fashion academy.

Do you have any tattoos yourself? If so, what do they mean to you?

Yeah I have loads of tattoos. They all symbolise certain periods in my life. I started with a tribal tattoo for my 20th, mainly because I feel connected with native people. About 7 years ago I also got stars on my lower arm to symbolise my children. My latest tattoo was actually performed by myself – an origami crane!

What is Arnhem like as a city/town to live in?

Arnhem has a great vibe. It’s full of creative, artistic and likeminded people. The area allows creatives to really flourish and push themselves further. The city has a lot of artistic academies which is maybe why we have a really good mix of people. Arnhem also has a lot of nature around the city. We have the Veluwe (a forest-rich ridge of hills (1100 km2) as our back yard! The Veluwe features many different landscapes, including woodland, heath, some small lakes and Europe’s largest sand drifts.

Who is your most inspirational tattoo artist?

I admire a lot of tattoo artists! Mostly artists who do modern styles, like Xoïl. There’s lot’s of talented people out there who I want to learn from! Cody Eich, Kizun, Jef Palumbo, Timur Lysenko, Peter Aurisch and so on…

What are your favourite styles of tattoo and why?

I like the more graphic styles – these are close to my heart and relate to my own style. Collages, geometrics, pen drawings from old books, a bit of water colour or paint styles chucked in is also cool!

What’s next for Art & Ink? Do you have any big plans/news in the pipeline?

Well I just started my new studio in May. I’m currently figuring out how I can make it the best studio in this part of the Netherlands working with modern styles. I’d love to employ a female colleague in the future, maybe with a different style of working so that we can learn from each other.

If I have the time, I’d like to participate at Tae Tu (an Urban Ink & Art Festival) in September. I also love making urban art and would live to travel and go abroad. I’m currently working on an art gallery photo book and from there I want to exhibit my work in Germany and other countries.

In the Netherlands we’re slightly behind on appreciating urban art. I even think my work will do better outside my own country. I’ve already sold my work through Saatchi Online to London private collectors.

But for now it’s head down for me setting up the shop and studio. Come visit if you’re in the area 🙂
